3 Keys For Executive Presentation Skills - By Gail Kasper

Executive presenting is a combination of "an expression of your strengths" with "a learned skill." In other words, where do you excel in front of an audience? If you have worked with a coach and know these strengths, you can capitalize on them. And with regard to "skill," well, everything is about learning and speech writing is no different.  

 

In developing your material, you MUST keep the audience in mind. Many fail to recognize this and only speak with the intention of impressing themselves.  If you are speaking to subordinates, by incorporating stories that include their successes, as well as your own successes and personal failures, you will create warmth and endear them to you.  There are 3 main elements to consider when writing your presentation:

 

1. Passion:  The presentation you are making is an opportunity for you to share a specific passion with your audience. A presentation cannot be a mere transfer of data or PowerPoint slides. Consider "the why." Why are you are speaking to this group, what do you hope they will learn, and how can they immediately put your information to use? 

 

2. Include Visuals: Try to make your presentation as visual as possible. Whether you are using a flip chart, dry erase board, pictures, a hint of a PowerPoint presentation, or physical actions, it will draw your audience in and stimulate their attention.  

 

3. Steady Performance: As with all of my training, you have to prepare extraordinarily for your presentation. This means that you must practice for several days, if not weeks, beforehand. To present well, you have to be wholly engaged in the ideas.

 

As a side note, do not forget to come from behind the lecturn.  This will engage your listeners and draw attention to your words.

 

And never forget, that every presentation will either strengthen others perception of you as a leader or reduce it.
