Fun Up Your Workout - By Gail Kasper

Just because you’re serious about staying fit doesn’t mean you have to strip your workout of fun. In fact, it’s a great idea to make your exercise routine more entertaining because, chances are, you’ll want to work out longer. Adding an element of fun will keep you from getting bored and help you stay fully engaged in what you’re doing, thus maximizing your benefits.


To fun up your next workout, try the following:


Add Music: Just as competitive ice skaters and gymnasts practice their routines to music, you can do your workout while listening to your favorite tunes. Select music that suits your preferences and matches the pace of your workout. Before you know it, not only will your songs be over, your workout will be, too … which might propel you to play a couple more songs and exercise a little longer!


Invite A Friend: Whether you’re going for a jog or need a spotter for those heavy weights, having a friend along makes it feel more like playing than working out. Schedule time to exercise with a friend and catch up on each other’s lives. Good workout buddies help one another get the most from each session. They can offer encouragement while keeping you accountable and making the workout more enjoyable.


Incorporate Playful Tools: Mini trampolines, exercise balls, hula hoops – what do these items have in common? They’re fun! They add another dimension to your exercise routine, turning fitness into play. You might even laugh out loud while you enjoy a more playful routine.


If you’re still not convinced that funning up your workout is the way to go, then consider this: Research shows that just believing in the benefits of fun and laughter is enough to experience them, such as decreased pain. When you feel less pain, you’re more likely to work out longer and harder, bringing added fitness benefits to your body.


So the next time you work out, put on some music, bring a friend, or add playful fitness tools. Your workout will be more enjoyable and you’ll likely spend more time on keeping fit, just for the fun of it.
