Leadership Development: Essential Qualities Of A Leader - By Gail Kasper

by Gail Kasper, Author, Television Host, Certified Fitness Trainer, and Motivational Speaker

A leader empowers people!  For the most part, employees want to do a good job.  They want to succeed in their work.  As a leader, you position your people to thrive in their position.

By empowering people, a leader gives the employee the tools to do the job so the employee is empowered to take charge and complete a task.  One is prompted to ask, "What qualities make an effective leader?"  Below are a list of those deemed critical:

Reliability: A leader has to be reliable. There aren't too many employees who will respect a manager who does not have integrity to do what he says he will do.  A leader has to be not only reliable; he must have a message that people can follow.  Leaders have to be consistent in their actions and efforts; otherwise it might cause his followers to doubt his dedication to the cause.

A Motivator: A leader has to motivate.  Leaders must be able to determine the difference between employees and understand that what motivates one employee, may not motivate another.

Leaders must understand the differences between leadership and management.  There is a place for both.  Below is a list of behaviors that differentiate the two:

Leaders innovate; managers administer

Leaders focus on people; managers focus on systems

Leaders develop; managers maintain

Leaders inspire trust; managers rely on control

Leaders have long-term perspectives; managers have short-term perspectives

Leaders challenge the status-quo; managers accept it

Leaders have an eye on the horizon; managers have an eye on the bottom line

With regard to the specific qualities of a leader, though there are many, below is a list of the critical few:

Visionary Status: A leader is a visionary, and he or she brings that vision to the people.  A vision is a clear plan which the team feels empowered to follow. The vision brings hope to followers, and inspires them to strive to achieve something.

"A leader is a dealer in hope." - Napoleon Bonaparte

Be Bold: It requires guts to be a leader, the strength to step up, step out, and stand up for what is right.  Not everyone wants this responsibility and many prefer to follow. Whatever the role, the leader knows how to guide and support and make others feel good about their choice.

Positive Attitude: A leader is always positive, but real.  Naturally, challenges occur, but the true leader knows how to maneuver the challenge to get to the opportunity and propel the team forward regardless.

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." -Winston Churchill.
