Who is that one person you would like to connect with immediately? You have known them for years, perhaps they are a family member, a boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, long-time employee, or boss. Somehow, every time a conversation starts, it goes in one direction, the wrong direction. Somehow, both parties walk away feeling frustrated and upset.
Believe it or not, it is very easy to make someone’s day, immediately! It only involves a little restraint and a lot of listening and nodding.
First, choose a day when you will practice this exercise. We all need a goal day. It could be tomorrow, next week, or the next time you will be in their presence.
Second, make your time together about ‘them.’ Of course, they might ask about you, but keep it short and quickly get back to them When they discuss their challenges, ideas, and life, do the following things. With respect to their challenges: Be supportive and loyal. In other words be on their side regardless of whether you understand their position or not. Also, ask “What are you going to do” Most often, we offer input and unsolicited advice with regard to a situation for which they are closest and typically know what to do. (Ask yourself, “Is it more important that I look knowledgeable, or more important that I am there for this person?)
With regard to their ideas, agree and tell them, “What a great idea, you should try that.” Encourage them so that they recognize their value and worth.
With regard to their life, just listen. (Ask yourself, Is it more important that I look knowledgeable, or more important that I am there for this person?)
Most challenges and disagreements are the result of old baggage and create an unrealistic image of the true relationship. To break the pattern, break your pattern. Be supportive, encouraging, and agreeable. Try this for just one day, and let us know how you do.
Decide the day.
