Whatever Your Age, Love Wins Over Fear - By Gail Kasper

Gail Kasper, Author, Television Host, Certified Fitness Trainer, and Motivational Speaker

Many years ago, I was involved in a relationship that was toxic. Of course, it didn’t start out that way. It began with him sweeping me off my feet and me seeing only his good points – his charm, his success in the medical field, his way of lavishing attention on me.

In time I began to see another part of him, a very dark and abusive side. Little by little he turned into a modern-day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, kind and attentive one day, cruel and sadistic the next. He was no longer the man I’d fallen in love with. I knew I had to leave the relationship, but I didn’t – not right away. In large part, fear kept me with him. Why? Too complicated to explain here; read my story in Another Day Without a Cage: My Breakthrough From Self-Imprisonment to Total Empowerment.

The good news is that ultimately, I left that toxic relationship. It was love that did it. Love for myself, love for my family, and love of life itself won over fear, propelling me to get out and get on with the business of living well. Love gave me the strength to overcome my fears and become a winner at the game of life.

In his book From Fear To Love, child behavior expert B. Bryan Post talks about the existence of only two primary emotions: love and fear. Post states that a person’s body-mind system knows one of two basic states: surviving or thriving. When I gave into stress-induced fear in my relationship, I found myself in a state of survival. Only when I stepped out of that zone and entered a place of understanding, acceptance and joy within myself, a place where love rules over fear, was I finally able to thrive.

It does not matter what your age is. As a motivational speaker, I’ve seen people of all ages struggle with what they incorrectly think they “should” do – a mixed message clouded by fear – and what they really want to do – a heartfelt desire coming from love. Examples abound. The talented young artist who wants to become a professional artist but gives in to the “shoulds” of her fears and becomes a teacher instead … only to regret her decision, quit teaching, and finally pursue an art career in earnest. The well-paid business executive who wants to open his own franchise but worries that he “should” stay right where he is … only to quit his job years later, open that franchise, and realize he would have been much happier launching his entrepreneurial dreams years earlier. The young man too scared to invite the girl of his dreams to prom. The forty-something woman too scared to apply for her dream job after years of being an at-home mom.

Whatever you age, don’t let your fears stop you from living abundantly! Believe me when I say that total empowerment is within your reach. Whether you’re thirteen or thirty or sixty-three, you can come from a place of love to empower yourself. You can overcome fear to do what you love. This is your ticket to greater happiness and fulfillment. Love does win over fear, every time.
